Learning From Patients (continued…)

“Illness is the night side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.”  ~ Susan Sontag

I see this quote living out in my own life and in the lives of those I see everyday.  Afraid to acknowledge this dual citizenship, we keep this “other” passport shoved into the back of the drawer, hoping we’ll never have to claim it. (more…)

Turning Seven

“We attract hearts by the qualities we display; we retain them by the qualities we possess.”

~ Jean Baptiste Antoine Suard

As hemma turns seven this fall it is a chance to reflect on our birth, growth, and future.  Our birth was driven by a passion to create a place of healing, that would foster a deepening connection to self and others; a place that would be welcoming to people of all ages and all walks of life.  Since then I have watched as hemma has taken on a life of its own as each of you have connected to this vision and deepened it in some way.  As a patient, student, volunteer, teacher, practitioner, or staff member, each of you has contributed your own unique version of our vision, infinitely expanding the idea of what we are and what we are becoming.

Hemma means home, but I realize now that Hemma also means you, each one of you, that walks through our doors and shares your unique and beautiful self.  Thank you all for being a part of this shared vision!

Come celebrate with us on Sunday October 19th.  Have some cake, say hi to friends, and enjoy some great deals as we celebrate our 7th!
